Daylight falling through the roof of the Benagil sea cave
Sagres to the Guadiana · every bookable day out on the Algarve coast

The Algarve is a coastline with a door in it.

Which boat actually goes inside Benagil. Where the dolphins are. What a day on the Ria Formosa costs, and which town to sleep in so the mornings work. Every tour on this coast, reviewed and priced.

Two questions, and the trip plans itself
The cave

There is no path into Benagil. Only the water.

Algar de Benagil is a dome of gold sandstone with a circle cut clean out of its roof and a beach inside that you cannot walk to. Boats run at it from Portimão, Albufeira and Carvoeiro; kayaks and paddleboards go the last stretch under their own arms.

The postcards

The Algarve’s best days are on the water. Two are not.

The cave with the skylight, the dolphins off Albufeira, the arches at Lagos and the lagoon behind Faro — then, for anyone who wants dry ground under them, the hills and the clifftop path.

Where everyone ends up

One two-and-a-half-hour boat out of Albufeira outsells the whole coast.

Lagos

Ten minutes out of Lagos marina, the coast turns to arches.

Ponta da Piedade is a headland of ochre stacks, tunnels and grottoes, and the small boats are the only things narrow enough to get through the good ones. The town behind it does the rest: walls, tiled squares, a fish market and the cliff everyone walks out to at six.

Faro & the lagoon

Behind Faro the sea is a lagoon, and the beaches are islands.

The Ria Formosa runs sixty kilometres of channel, sandbank and salt pan between the city and the Atlantic. Its beaches are barrier islands reached by ferry or small boat — Armona and Culatra with fishing villages and no cars, Deserta with nothing but sand. Seahorses, flamingos and the region’s clam beds live in between, and the tide writes the timetable.

When the sea says no

The Algarve’s problem is never the sun. It is the swell.

Atlantic swell and the afternoon wind shut the caves before they shut anything else — boats cancel, kayak slots move, and the west coast goes first. The answer is inland and uphill: the red castle at Silves, the cork and eucalyptus above Monchique, a vineyard, a Saturday market, a jeep on a dirt road.

Book the boat first

Book these before you land at Faro.

Most of the Algarve can be booked from a bar the night before. These four cannot. They run on dated tickets, a calm morning window, a border crossing, and a driver who needs your flight number.

  1. 01Guided Kayaking Tour to the Benagil CaveCave kayaks go out in the calm morning window before the wind builds. Summer mornings are spoken for weeks ahead.
  2. 02Zoomarine Amusement Park Entry TicketEntry is for the date you pick when you book, and the park keeps a season rather than a year.
  3. 03Seville Day Trip from the AlgarveOne departure, a border and a very long day — and Spanish clocks run an hour ahead of Portuguese ones.
  4. 04Faro airport – Albufeira: Private Return TransferThe driver meets a flight number at arrivals. That only works if the booking exists before you take off.
Only on the Algarve

Three Algarve days that copy badly anywhere else.

Warm water and good beaches are not rare. A cave with a skylight, a lagoon with villages on its islands, and the cliff Europe stops at belong to this coast alone.

The doorway

The cave with a skylight

Algar de Benagil is a sandstone dome the sea hollowed out until the roof gave up: a near-perfect circle of daylight over a private half-moon of sand, a few hundred metres east of Benagil beach. There is no path down and no path in. Boats from Portimão and Albufeira run past the mouth, kayaks and paddleboards go through it, and that is why one cave sells three completely different mornings.

Sixty kilometres of lagoon

The beaches that are islands

The Ria Formosa is a shallow lagoon held behind a line of sandbanks from west of Faro almost to the Spanish border. Its beaches are islands — Armona and Culatra with fishing villages and no cars on them, Deserta with nothing at all — and the water between is a nursery for seahorses and a larder of clams and oysters. Small boats leave Faro and Olhão all day; the tide, not the schedule, decides the route.

The end of the map

Where Europe runs out

At Cabo de São Vicente the land simply stops: a lighthouse on the last cliff, Atlantic on three sides, and the final sunset in mainland Europe. Sagres sits behind it in more or less permanent wind, which is why the surf schools are here and the cave boats are not. Come for the cape; stay for the empty beaches on the wild coast running north of it.

Albufeira

Albufeira books more boats than anywhere else on this coast.

The marina west of the old town is the region’s engine room: speedboats to Benagil, catamarans out to the dolphins, and a queue of jeeps heading for the hills behind. The cliffs at Olhos de Água take the morning; the town takes the evening.
